Dick-tock, dick-tock

So today was the first of a whole months worth of episodes that will be about time. Ranging from the measurement of it over the millennia, to the perception of it, even breaking down how we got to have 60 seconds in a minute and 60 minutes in an hour. All of that and more are to come each week as we touch on a different aspect of time.

Episode 53 we covered only a few of the calendars that have exsisted through the course of human life. It seems as though people have been trying to measure time as long as they have been walking the Earth, which makes sence. You need to know when to plant and harvest your crops, when the rainy season was to expect flooding, and probably the most important aspect of time is being able to accurately measure it over time in a manner where it stays consistent with the changing seasons.

Early civilizations used the moon ti first make their measurements, and its easy to see why. It is very easy to see the moon changing every night over the course of a month and then repeating itself, so due to this, the first humans were able to make lunar calendars and accurately measure 28-30 days, as that is the time it takes the moon to go through its entire phase.

It then progressed to solar calendars once early astronomers were about to see and chart the movement of the stars through the night sky. They were able to measure the time it take the Earth to travel around the sun, BEFORE they knew the Earth went around the sun with great accuracy, sit and think about that for a moment.
